Q: How do you recommend securing or “weighing down” outdoor décor?
A: I tend to avoid lightweight decorative objects outdoors, as they are prone to movement and disruption. Instead, I favor substantial, grounded pieces—stone bowls, sculptural objects, and weightier accessories that convey permanence.
These elements not only solve a practical concern but also elevate the visual composition. Heavier objects feel intentional and enduring, reinforcing the architectural quality of the space.
All-weather hurricanes, an onyx bowl, and metal lanterns designed for outdoor entertaining
Q: What are the key elements for a well-designed tablescape?
A: Lighting is one of the most impactful elements in an outdoor tablescape. It sets the mood and defines the dining experience. Hurricane lanterns, in particular, are highly effective—they provide ambient illumination while also introducing a layer of architectural character to the table.
The style of the lantern should align with the overall design language. A traditional lantern complements a classical garden setting, while a clean-lined, modern fixture enhances a contemporary environment. The goal is to ensure that even the smallest elements reinforce the larger design narrative.
Texture, tone, and pattern inspired by the interiors
Q: What is your advice for selecting outdoor color palettes?
A: When selecting colors for an outdoor living space, I consistently rely on two primary references. First, I look inward—to the interior of the home. The materials, finishes, and color palette established inside should inform the exterior. Often, I will carry those tones outside in lighter, brighter variations to create a sense of harmony and continuity.
Second, I consider the surrounding environment. Whether the setting is lush and green, urban and architectural, or dry and desert-like, the landscape plays a critical role. From there, the decision becomes strategic: do we create contrast for visual impact, or develop a more subtle palette that blends seamlessly into the surroundings?
High-end, durable textiles offer comfort & style
Q: How do you make an outdoor space feel more inviting?
A: An inviting outdoor space should feel like a natural extension of the interior. Too often, exterior environments are underfurnished and lack the layering necessary to feel complete.
I recommend approaching outdoor design with the same rigor as interior spaces—incorporating furniture, rugs, accessories, and lighting in thoughtful layers. This creates a sense of comfort, familiarity, and livability.
Additional elements such as integrated televisions or fire features can further enhance the experience. Today’s portable propane fire pits, for example, offer flexibility while maintaining a strong design presence—bringing both warmth and a natural focal point to the space.
Layering of outdoor decor pieces in similar tones elevates the space
Q: What are your recommendations for outdoor lighting?
A: Layered lighting is essential. Lanterns remain a cornerstone, particularly with the wide range of exterior-rated LED options now available in various forms and finishes. They introduce pattern, texture, and depth in ways that static materials cannot.
For a more organic and atmospheric approach, candlelight is unmatched. Whether clustered within a carved stone vessel or arranged as pillar candles on elevated holders, the objective is to create a composition that delivers both illumination and visual interest.
